Dear friends of LCI:
I truly hope you and yours have enjoyed a wonderful summer!
Like everyone else, summer at the Lennon house is a busy time. Between ministry, LCI activities, the paddleboard business, and chasing down Rand, our summers are full. But this summer has also been a time of preparation. In fact, our Lord has really been underscoring this point to me over the last three months.
Scripture exhorts us to “Be dressed ready for service” . . . to keep our “lamps burning” (Luke 12:35). As I have reflected on this verse, I can think of no better person to model the principle behind the words than one of my neighbors in Malibu, Laird Hamilton.
Laird virtually invented the concept of “tow-in” surfing that allows him to ride some of the biggest waves in the world. His fame is world renown, and every summer he comes to Malibu simply to ready himself for the sole purpose of riding these monstrous waves. He trains hard, and he has developed such a highly focused regimen that professionals from other sports come to learn his technique. In a recent interview he commented that he trains hard because he wants to be ready when the next big swell hits, and since he never knows when that will happen, he conditions himself to be ready all the time.
As Laird trains himself to be the best in the world at riding the big waves, the intensity with which he focuses his body challenges me to always be spiritually ready . . . to prepare myself for the next big wave of opportunity to serve the Lord. Of course, I never know when that will come. I could be tomorrow. It could be months from now. But God calls me to ready myself so that I will be fully ready to serve when He calls. In the same way that Laird disciplines his body, I need to discipline myself with the Word and with prayer. I need to be attentive and watchful, always preparing myself for the purpose of advancing His Kingdom.
At LCI, we are preparing, and we encourage you to join us in that preparation. We are helping to facilitate a Bring Life event this Fall, and we have already begun planning a major event for the Fall of 2014. As you will read below, we have plans for several significant trips over the next twelve months. We have much to do, but we are getting ourselves ready!
Come join us as we get ready . . . ready to go forth and bring life to the nations!
Upcoming Events and trips
Bring Life LA
The concept for Bring Life Los Angeles was born when LCI was contacted by individuals connected with Alpha UK. Upon visiting our city, their hearts were grieved when they saw so many of our residents living on the streets. Back home in London, they are part of a very effective ministry that has rescued many of their friends from life on the streets. So, they began to wonder . . . “Could God be placing in our hearts a call to go minister to the poor in Los Angeles?” When they shared their heart with us, we said “Come!” And come they will! On October 17th a team of 15 men and women, many of home once lived on the streets themselves will be arriving in Los Angeles to minister to the urban poor of our city. We will be partnering with Alpha USA, First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, Oasis of Hollywood, Union Rescue Mission, and many other wonderful organizations. Of course, activities will include outreach to our neighbors living on the streets of Hollywood and Skid Row. There will also be specialized Alpha training and several opportunities to gather with others and pray for those whose lives have been devastated by a poverty of both body and spirit. If you would like to learn more, or if you would like to get involved with our new friends from London, please contact us.
El Salvador: December 2013
Our next trip to El Salvador will be a “scouting” expedition to determine the viability of developing marketplace ministries as well as furthering efforts to create bridges between the older and younger generations. As always, we will continue in our efforts to bring unity to the churches of that country, specifically in the region of Santa Ana. Our departure date is tentatively set for December 9th and we will return to Los Angeles on the 17th. Space is limited and the time is short, so if you have any interest in joining our team, please contact us as soon as possible.
Trips in 2014:
• As mentioned in our last newsletter, we are planning a trip to northern Japan in the early Spring. And as before, our team will provide vital support and outreach to those areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami’s of 2011.
• We return to El Salvador in June (23rd through 30th) with a special focus on engaging the youth of that country It is our hope to include on our team several youth leaders from the Los Angeles area in an effort to build bridges between the youth of El Salvador and the young people of Los Angeles.
• We are exploring the possibility of visiting Israel in November for a two-week period. In addition to touring the country, we will also be offering an intense study program hosted by our friends from Mt. Carmel ministries.
